Chapter Eight

Derek could tell that his mate wasn’t at all happy with him while he fixed the man’s ear, but that was his problem. It needed to be done unless he wanted to go the rest of his life with only half an ear.

It wasn’t funny at the time, but when Derek finished, he couldn’t help but laugh over the way Jake complained the entire time Derek stitched him up, putting disinfectant on the other little cuts and bites he’d accumulated.

Jake had insisted that Derek was being purposely mean, but even he had to admit that he was impressed when he had a couple of mirrors given to him so he could properly see Derek’s work.

He even whistled. “Nice. I’m surprised. Do you have any training?”

“Nothing formal, no, but my brother and I always got into our fair share of scrapes. We had to patch up whatever was so deep that the healing we had wouldn’t kick in fast enough to heal.”

Jake got a pretty guilty look on his face when Derek said that, which Derek didn’t like at all.

“It wasn’t like you were the one who gave us those wounds,” he said.

“No,” Jake admitted. “But I don’t like that they were given to you by other shifters who were just as clueless as I used to be. You’re not anything like how I thought you’d be. You’re just like me,” he said.

Derek’s stupid heart did a weird little flip in his chest at that. “I…I always wanted someone to tell me that,” he said.

Jake cupped his cheeks. “It’s true, and I’m sorry I ever even thought anything bad about you or your kind. If you say your alphas are all right, then I believe you. I’m so sorry that all of this shit keeps happening to you.”

“Not just me though,” Derek said, and a little bit of hope ignited in his chest. “You know what? I think it’s getting better. I mean, sure, your old pack wants to kill us all, but we have bear shifters in our pack, and a few normal werewolves, and now you,” Derek said. “That has to mean that things are changing. It’s slow, but it’s changing.”

Jake kissed him, and Derek leaned into it, moaning softly when the man’s tongue reached out, slipping between his lips, and licked inside of his mouth.

They kissed softly for several minutes before pulling away, but that was more than enough time for the both of their dicks to get ideas. Derek could feel his heartbeat pulsing in his erection, and his balls were so tight that they ached.

It was the same for Jake. Derek knew this because of the sound his mate made when Derek put his hands between the man’s legs.

Jake’s cock was heavy and hot in Derek’s hand, and Jake groaned, thrusting his hips into Derek’s hand.

Derek was pleased with the fact that he’d left a couple of things behind. There were some towels left over under the sink which he hadn’t picked up yet, so he and Jake got into the warm shower to clean the remaining blood off.
